James,

Sorry- I see that you asked that question before... It is an old tree, probably 300+. We will core the surrounding trees and hopefully get an idea.

The pnuematic launcher is not a new idea- just a new application.

ENTS,

Check out this video from Aaron- it really gives an idea of how large the tree is!

Is that one monster piece of dead wood someone is standing on in that vid?!  You weren't kidding, if that shook loose that could take out the whole crew, looked pretty solid though.  Congrats, Will and everybody!  Still jealous as I can be.  I live right down the road from you boys and gal, drop a line so I can climb one with ya.  Seiously, trying really hard not to keel over with jealousy.

What an amazing tree! And what an amazing shot with that contraption to get the rope set on the first try! I'm impressed!

The photo looking down from the crown lets me know that I would NEVER climb like that. I'm not scared of heights, exactly, but I respect Mr. Gravity and don't wish to tempt him.

The crown of that tree is also impressive. What a mass of solid wood!

If I can find the time I need to start bushwhacking in the Smokies with an eye toward helping you guys locate big trees. Do you think it will unseat the Sag Branch poplar?

What is the soil like around this tree? Stony? Just earthy?

The lower trunk looks more or less undamaged from the photos.

Does that forest get much in the way of ice storms to overcome, or just rain and snow?

Sweet find. If I read the miles right, looks like a healthy walk in there to spot this one.

I hate that I wasn't able to join you on this.  I wanted to bring this topic current to reiterate the question on how the soil was around the site.  Was it rocky, etc.?  The site seems to have many 13 foot cbh tulips.  The soil must be of magnificent quality.

A storm just passed directly over that portion of the Smokies; the weather service said it appeared to be a tornado. Fingers are crossed that the terrain worked yet again to protect the trees up there!
