Of late, Ray Asselin and I have been keeping an eye out for weird tree forms. Maybe we should have an NTS contest for the strangest forms.

That's wonderful about your new interest! But don't get me started. I have been collecting weird tree forms for years and have abundant photos. I wrote about, and presented images of, some of the truly weird creatures I have seen seen in the woods in a piece I posted here: http://www.slideshare.net/rihiggins/woo ... s-41270585. It is a completely scientific report that unveils a dozen new species that were unknown to modern zoology until I....well that are still unknown.
