Gros Morne National Park
Has anyone been up to Gros Morne National Park? It looks like the Yosemite Valley of the East. There really is not too much information about this place, I can assume that is the case because Newfoundland is off most people’s radar. That whole island does look so beautiful though. I heard there is a great hike that highlights much of the park and it is not a day hike. Just curious is any ENTS or WNTS members have trekked Newfoundland.

Marc,
If you visit I would be interested in reading a report of the park. One former member, Randy Cyr, posted a couple of photos from the park as part of a Atlantic Maritime sequence

but did not really have any descriptions to accompany the images. For others interested in the park, the Parks Canada website

Ed,
I have been to Gros Morne NP (ca. 1986) and hiked a good bit. I was most impressed with absolutely ANCIENT and enormous white cedar (Thuja occidentalis). I did not have a measuring tape but one tree took three arm spans which would be close to 19 feet dbh. However, I do not recall if it was a single trunk or multi-stemmed, but many were 3-4 foot diameter single stems. Up above treeline were some magnificent common juniper mats that could be super-old. It is a magical place well worth an ENTS visit.

I really want to go to The Rock someday. If I do, I'll take some pics for sure.

Re: Gros Morne National Park
It has been on my bucket list for some time. National Geographic Magazine did a pictorial on it back in the day. I think that was my first exposure to the Park. You should probably be able to find out some stuff about it by doing a search through their files. You're right though, there's not a tremendous amount of useful information on that park online. The official Canada National Parks site leaves a lot to be desired.
