The Two Tallest Trees In Iceland

Post by PAwildernessadvocate » Sat May 02, 2020 10:42 pm

Apparently the two tallest trees in Iceland are both Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), and located near a small village called Kirkjubæjarklaustur in south central Iceland. They were both planted in 1949.

In August of 2018, the tallest of the two was measured at 28.36 meters in height and 46.8 cm dbh. The next tallest (but actually the one with greater overall volume) was measured at 27.36 meters in height and 64.5 cm dbh.

I finally had the chance to visit the forest grove at Kirkjubæjarklaustur to see some of the tallest trees in Iceland, including the one that is purported to be the tallest tree in the country. All of the tallest ones here are Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), planted at his location during the 1940s.

I had my d-tape with me and measured this tree at 18.3 inches DBH. I measured several other Sitka spruce trees in the vicinity as having a larger DBH than that.
