Copper Beech in Chatham on the Cape

Post by pattyjenkins1 » Thu Jul 25, 2019 10:35 am

While visiting my sister, we drove past this ginormous copper beech on private property near the main road (Main St.) going toward the lighthouse in Chatham. I would've crashed the car had I been driving.

Dang! That's quite a beech near the beach! I like that sideways trunk (or is it a branch?).

Patty

I would have been in the same predicament driving. Brian, I can see why you refer the branch as a leader in the second photo enlarged? Regardless that beech must have a maximum spread for the species.

Brian,
The sideways (horizontal) "trunk" is a scaffold branch. The huge trunk on the left is a "leader." These distinctions come from my husband Peter, a Certified Arborist.
George,
Too bad I didn't have a tape measure!!

Patty-

Wow son of a BEECH what a what a great tree!
I agree with George the Crown must be at least 125-150' and the Circumference around 20'.
Just a guess but still a very impressive tree.
Live Oak in size.

Larry
