To Larry Tucei - regarding Gabriel Oak

Larry - just a note to commend you on your continuing search for live oaks across the Gulf South. Though, I noticed in your post about your trip through St. Martinville, LA, that you mis-identified the Gabriel Oak. The tree you photographed appears to be one next door and a little behind the Old Castillo Hotel which is right across the street from the Evangeline Oak. It's a beautiful sized tree - it could be one registerecd with the Live Oak Society named either the Tony Barras Oak or Hypolite Barras Oak. I wasn't able to confirm either, but it's close in size to both. In truth, the Gabriel Oak is located a ways north out of town at the Longfellow Evangeline State Park. It's marked with a plaque. Just as in life Gabriel and Evangeline were separated, so with the oaks named after them. Keep up the great work. WG

William, Thanks for the correction. I'll have to get back down and find out which is the correct name. A good excuse for me to have to come back to a beautiful area! I saw several more large Live Oaks last time down and wanted to come back. I just haven't made the trip back yet. Thanks again. Larry
