Appalachian Trail between Newfound Gap and Clingman's Dome

I recalled some lush forest in this section from a run I did in 2009. In my mind, I recalled it as even more idyllic than it actually is. It is a gorgeous high elevation spruce'yellow birch forest.

Picea rubens red spruce 108.0' 100.4' 99.9' 97.9' 96.4' 95.6' 95.3'

Sorbus americana mountain ash 51.4'

I expected more height in the red spruce but considering they're all near the top of the spine of the Smokies, I guess it's not all that bad. The mountain ash is a nice find. Yellow birch hit the 70's but I doubt any topped 80'.
