Landslide on 441, GSMNP

Post by mdavie » Fri Jan 25, 2013 9:15 am

I knew that the main highway through the park that goes between Cherokee NC and Gatlinburg TN had been closed due to a landslide from heavy rains last week. I just saw this video of it and thought I'd share it:

Too bad about that slide. I was just there the first weekend of November and drove that road from Cherokee through the park to Gatlinburg. Hope they can get it fixed in time for the summer tourist season!

Here's a picture I took near the top of Clingmans Dome showing all of the dead fir trees from the balsam wooly adelgid.

This is absolutely insane!!! I say leave it shut down for awhile. The most visited park in the nation could use a break from all those pesky humans.

Thanks for the information Michael. Here is another source of news on the landslide.

441 should be permanently closed! Fill in the grade and plant it with native shrubs and trees and expunge it from existence! Along with the Clingman's Dome Road and the road to Cades Cove. The GSMNP is a very sick Park, indeed. Make it less accessible to the things that cause it the most harm. (Wouldn't hurt to limit access to horseback riding, too.)

From a purely ecological point of view, no one would ever catch me complaining if this actually happened!

Given the importance of the road to the nature tourism economy of Cherokee, Gatlinburg and other local communities I doubt it will happen though.

No, it won't happen. But it should.

However, a road that very definitely needs to be taken apart, and which could be removed if enough pressure was exerted, is the piece of shit "Cherohala Skyway". It bisecsts what would otherwise be a tremendous roadless area, completely fucking it up and creating access almost exclusively for four-wheel enthusiasts to get into the National Forest roads and for motorcyclists who like it because almost no one else uses it. They wrecked the place to connect Robbinsville NC with Tellico Plains TN, and the influx of tourists never materialized. Because few use it, it's ripe for being pulled up and restored.

But I doubt that will ever happen, either. It would, however, be very nice if it was destroyed forever.

Wow, it pretty low down off the main crest. If I had to guess where the road would be taken out by landslides, it would be up near the crest. Those schists are so prone to failing.
