Fernbank Forest, GA - Rucker 10 Index reaches 136'

Post by eliahd24 » Mon Dec 10, 2012 1:17 pm

Fernbank Forest is a rich 65 acre Piedmont forest on the eastern edge of Atlanta, GA. It is comprised of partial old growth, with numerous trees known to date back into the 1700's. Currently the forest is not open to the public, with one exception being docent lead forest walks every few months. I spend over 5 years as a lead naturalist with Fernbank and had the opportunity to do a great deal of exploring. I recently had the chance to re-visit and gain access to the forest and update the Rucker 10 Index (average height of top 10 individual tallest species). It's quite impressive:

Fernbank Forest, Atlanta, GA
Species Height
LiTu 154.6
QuAl 143.2 (tallest known in GA?)
PiTa 142.2
CaGl 141.6
QuRu 135.7
LiSt 135.3
PiEc 131.6
QuFa 127.5 (tallest known in GA?)
UlAl 126.6 (tallest known in US?)
CaCo 121.7
----------------------------------
Rucker 10 index: 136.0

Eli,

Congratulations. Fernbank is impressive. The Rucker Index of 136 is the same as Mohawk Trail State Forest. However, I think the potential in Fernbank exceeds Mohawk. Take away white pine and white ash, and Mohawk would not be so impressive. The north country can 't grow the really big trees except for white pine.

I'm anxious to see the forests of Kauai in a few hours. It is the oldest of the settled islands, and also the wettest. Vegetation has had a long time to settle in. We'll see.

It's not open to the public anymore??!! That's terrible! I grew up near there and I loved to wander the forest on the trails. It has been quite some time since I've visited as an adult. The last time I was there I saw quite a few copperheads. Why is it closed these days?

James- after a 48 year lease to DeKalb County Schools (Fernbank Science Center), Fernbank Inc. (the Natural History Museum's parent 501(c)3) has taken back control and management of the forest. They are working on a forest inventory, survey, and campus master planning. I sure hope it can be reopened to the public soon, but in my estimation it will probably never be free. I believe it will be included with museum admission.

Update: tallest Pinus taeda has broken 144' now... the R10 continue to climb! I also suspect with additional searching a taller Lirio will be found, along with a taller Tilia and Carya species...

Eli,

Good show. Fernbank obviously offers us much. Are there many tulips over 150?

Bob- the ceiling for tulips in Fernbank Forest seems to be in the 150-155' range. Many are high 140's. The oldest ones have had their tops blown out, leaving them a good bit shorter than some of the younger tulips.

Eli,

An RHI of 138.4 is impressive. I've lost track og RHIs in Georgia. Which site has the highest?
