a Live Oak for Larry to add to his list

Post by tclikesbigtrees » Thu Aug 31, 2017 10:58 pm

Last week, my family and I went to Pensacola to drop off my younger daughter at college. When in the south, I am always on the look out for big Live Oaks. Before we went, I looked on the Florida champion tree website for Live Oaks and saw that there is one in Santa Rosa county, but it said discontinued for that tree. Since it was just around the corner from where we were going to stay, I figured that I would look for it, even though it said discontinued. The tree is on the grounds of the Pine Forest United Methodist Church and you cant miss it when you pull up. The tree is huge. I am glad that I looked for it.

Yes!

It looks like the best you could do would be CAH (circumference at ankle height).

Tom- Wow thanks for posting this great tree. I was in the Pensacola area last weekend swimming. I will have to go back down and measure this whopper. I would measure the Circumference at ground level. It is very similar to the E. O. Hunt oak in south Ms.

I'll go down Saturday morning early and get it measured and added to the listing. Larry

Larry- I was hoping you would respond soon. You were in the area last weekend and we were in the area the weekend before that. It is funny how that happens. I was glad that I had looked for that tree. I wonder why they have it as discontinued on the Florida champion tree site. Please post the measurements, if you do measure it. I would be interested to know what they are.

The Florida DOF has recently (in the last year or more) been removing, from their Champion tree web listings, entries with less than 80% of the current champion's points. I've noticed a number of oaks & cypress have been removed. I received a copy of their tree data for all entries on public land in November 2016, which appears to be post purge, I've uploaded some months ago:

http://www.ents-bbs.org/download/file.php?id=21426

It contains a number of entries no longer on their website.
