Is the Clar tree c340 feet to the highest living shoot or 340 feet to the dead top? If 340 feet to the highest living shoot, how tall was it originally to the dead top?
I hope that the logging is stopped, at least to the area around this tree and further than 75 feet.

Re: Clar tree
Just for interest, where and how tall is the tallest redwood in Napa County and in Lake County?
Re: Clar tree
I can't seem to find any documentation on a measurement of the tree. Coupled with the suspiciously even number of 340 feet, I'd assume it's just an estimate. It's possible it has been measured properly though.
Edit: found this newspaper article from 1986 detailing how it was measured that year to a height of 336 feet. However, it clearly details the method used for measurement, which is the highly inaccurate tangent method which often significantly overstates the actual height. Based on that, I'd be very surprised if it were 340 feet.https://northbaydigital.sonoma.edu/digital/collection/Lebaron/id/1032/
Still, this is clearly a very ancient tree and I absolutely hope it remains protected.

Re: Clar tree
Hello amd, thank you for the info and the newspaper link, very interesting article.
Does anyone on the forum live near enough to measure this tree, would be fascinating to know just how tall it is? If confirmed as being the the tallest tree in Sonoma County it may help with the saving of the forest around it.
I have a book called 'Redwoods' which I bought as a kid on Camberley Market in Surrey, England whilst on holiday and it has a whole section about the logging along the Russian River so it is an area that I have always found interesting.

Re: Clar tree
The Clar tree has a 2018 LiDAR indicated height of 328 feet, though typically these LiDAR returns miss the tip of dead tops. It's the tallest tree in Sonoma County.

Chris Atkins measured Clar with Impulse200 and prism pole survey back around 2002. He got 337' to the dead top.Ral wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2023 7:58 amhttps://www.sfchronicle.com/travel/article/Sonoma-redwood-tree-California-forest-17331172.php#:~:text=Up%20from%20the%20riverbank%20near,it%20was%20a%20logging%20capital.
