OTTAWA (AFP) – A Canadian ecologist has discovered the world's largest beaver dam in a remote area of northern Alberta, an animal-made structure so large it is visible from space.  Researcher Jean Thie said Wednesday he used satellite imagery and Google Earth software to locate the dam, which is about 850 metres (2,800 feet) long on the southern edge of Wood Buffalo National Park

Great find!  Rhonda and I will be spending August through November this year, on the north side of the Great Slave Lake, just north of Wood Buffalo N.P.  There might be a trip report there waiting for us!

   Ditto! (Ooh, does this make me a ditto-head?). Great find. One wonders what drives the beavers to such a feat. Can there be two classes of beavers, rural beavers and urban beavers? I wonder what kind of community interactions are going on? Is there a head beaver somewhere inside the lodge?
