Tree Maximums - Genus of the Week: Hamamelis (Witchhazel)

Post by Matt Markworth » Fri Nov 22, 2013 9:11 pm

Hi All,

Genus of the Week: Hamamelis

Excerpt from Jess's MaxList . . .
Hamamelis.PNG
Will's post on the tall and girthy Hamamelis virginiana . . .
Near it was the tall witch-hazel. Its 24.4 inch girth supported a tip 53' high! The previous record was 47.3'.

Will's updated measurement in 2011 . . .
Nearby we remeasured the tallest witch-hazel at 51.4' with the Nikon. I think I had it over 53' before.

I'd like to see a good photo of the gigantic witch hazel. I've never seen one taller than me!

George,

Nice! Is the spread for the entire group? Only the spread of the measured stem should be recorded, in my opinion...

Will,

Yes. The spread is of the entire group. I'll only measure the spread of the largest stem on these multistemmed species from now on so there's no confusion.

Matt,

Forget about the spread of the Wissahickon specimen for now. The girth is fine. I measured the largest stem at 4.5'.

George,

Thanks for the detailed submission! It's really helpful to see a description of the habitat and a photo.

I listed it as the co-record max girth . . . http://www.ents-bbs.org/viewtopic.php?f=393&t=5221

Dear NTS,

Cari Leland of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory is completing a limited tree ring chronology of this species from Black Rock Forest in southern NY for a class project. So far, the oldest H. virginiana dated is 58 years old. http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/~adk/oldlisteast/
