The area occupied by the SFR Yugoslavia – a strip of land stretching from Central Europe to the Balkans – lies in a region with a history of ethnic conflict. The country was a conglomeration of six regional republics and two autonomous provinces roughly divided on ethnic lines and split up in the 1990s into several independent countries. These eight federal units were the six republics Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia; and the two autonomous provinces Kosovo and Vojvodina within Serbia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakup_of_Yugoslavia

I belive that there isn't really that much ethnic difference- it's more about religeous and cultural differences- with some being Catholic, some Orthodox and some Muslims.

For a real horror story, read up on what the Slovenes, Croats, and various Muslim groups did to the Serbs at the bidding of the Nazis during WWII. They pretty much slaughtered one out of eight Serbs at the behest of their German overlords who were anxious to exterminate the Slavic Serbs.

My local PBS station just had a rerun of a Nature episode focused on the Balkans. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes ... tion/5485/ Although the didn't visit any of the same places as Jeroen/Kouta/Michael and the endless comparisons to Tolkien's Middle Earth are annoying, still some nice places visited. You can watch it online (though maybe only in the US).

Youtube has a document also called "Wild Balkans", but apparently not the same Chris linked. The first part is here:

Focus is on animals. And as often in Europe, there is also much about people. At the beginning the film shows the black pine forest of Crna Poda and great views to the Tara Canyon.
