Hi all,

A friend gave me this sapling. He said he bought it from someone who simply called it a "redwood" and said not to plant it within 30 feet of any building or other tree. Can anyone help me identify the species? Thanks!

Looks like a coast redwood. Here's a page that quickly compares the two: http://lh2treeid.blogspot.com/search/label/Taxodiaceae

I've read that coast redwoods don't tolerate freezing weather well at all (It's what stops their northern range at the oregon border). I hope your planting site is suitable.

Somewhat Dawn Redwood looking.

If so, entire rachis will drop off in fall / winter.

Patrick,

Looks like dawn redwood (Metasequoia) to me. They have opposite branchlets (unlike baldcypress), which you can see some of in your photos. It's also much more commonly planted in the Southeast than is coast redwood. Winter will definitely separate those two.

I have planted 2 Dawn Redwoods over the years in Massachusetts and they have both done well. One is still growing at about 45' and the other would certainly be over 60' now if it had not been cut down by the latest new house owner who wanted more lawn. As Bob Leverett will attest there is a a quite large one on Smith College Campus in Northampton, which probably needs measuring again.

Patrick,

Pretty cool! Dawn redwood seems to do well in Ohio. Here's the Ohio Champion, which is 16'9" (at 3') x 90.5'.
