Taking LIDAR to new heights

NASA seems poised to add a satellite based LIDAR probe on the international space station that will be capable of mapping above ground biomass from 50 degrees north latitude to 50 degrees south latitude - a swath that comprises the almost all tropical and temperate forests on Earth. I wonder if it will have single tree resolution?!

These fingerprints will provide enough detail to measure the height of the trees and where the tree canopy begins with an accuracy of about 3-1/3 feet (1 meter). From this information, scientists will be able to estimate how much biomass the trees contain and, in turn, how much carbon they are storing.
Assuming the horizontal resolution isn't drastically different from the vertical, it kinda sounds like it. Though I bet the aircraft based surveys currently in existence are still quite a bit more accurate/denser sampling mesh (duh, the airplane is a lot closer to the ground)
