Welcome to Climbing Knots

These animated knots are for climbers, rescue workers, arborists, tower-climbers, and others who use rope in man-carrying applications. Select the knots from: the index above left; the pictures above; or the Climbing Applications page.

This selection is based on consultation with, and feedback from, many experienced climbers. Click on the picture on the right to see the selection.

Closely Related Knots

Click on the Alpine Butterfly Bend to access three very closely related knots: Ashley Bend; the Hunter's Bend; and the Zeppelin Bend.

Similarly, click on the Girth Hitch (Strap Hitch) to access the Cow or Lanyard Hitch and the Cow Hitch tied using loops.

Climbing, caving, etc., are challenging and potentially dangerous. Do not regard this website as a substitute for thorough instruction and expert supervision.
"I love science and it pains me to think that so many are terrified of the subject or feel that choosing science means you cannot also choose compassion, or the arts, or be awe by nature. Science is not meant to cure us of mystery, but to reinvent and revigorate it." by Robert M. Sapolsky
