Reign of the Big Trees
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As AMERICAN FORESTS prepares for the online release of the 2011 National Register of Big Trees this summer, the Spring issue of AMERICAN FORESTS magazine will recognize the blight of a big tree favorite, the Eastern Hemlock. The feature article, "The Last of the Giants" by Will Blozan, describes the efforts of documenting and saving the last of the old-growth Eastern hemlock forests that are disappearing as a result of the hemlock woolly adelgid. Many record-breaking hemlocks have already been lost to this pest, and great efforts are being made to preserve the remaining giants.

Look for this article and others in the Spring issue of AMERICAN FORESTS. You'll also be able to see the thrones lost and gained when the 2011 National Register of Big Trees comes out this summer at http://www.americanforests.org/resources/bigtrees/.

Will,

Congratulations on the article. Our increasing visibility courtesy of American Forests, albeit by a circuitous route, may launch a new, golden era of ENTS. If we can succeed in the video stream on tree measuring that will get AF approval, a new era will have been ushered in. Here's hoping.

These enormous eastern hemlocks would be so impressive - if they weren't dead on arrival. What's killing them off? Read about the threat to eastern hemlocks and what's being done to fight it in this great article "The Last of the Giants" by Will Blozan http://ow.ly/5gtgv

The entire issue is 202 MB in size: http://www.americanforests.org/products ... 1final.pdf

Reading this reminds me of some big hemlocks Will took me to see last year in the upper part of Cataloochee Valley. While not quite records, these trees were big and ALIVE! Will and the NPS had treated them and most were healthy. Some were in the 15ft cbh range and 140-145 feet tall.

I feel privileged to have met the Usis hemlock. Will took me to see it just before it gave up the ghost. It truly was a wonderful tree.
