I agree with the others. Yellow birch. I've seen bark patterns on very old yellow birch that look very similar to your tree. It's a heck of a find.
I agree with Dan. It's great to see these truly exceptional old monarchs.

Welcome aboard! That is indeed a yellow birch, which often grows on nurse logs that eventually rot away. I live in Asheville and get out to search for trees a fair amount. You're welcome to come along on some adventures, especially since you have no qualms about heading off trail.
