Continuing CT tuliptree hunting

Post by AndrewJoslin » Tue Feb 28, 2017 2:42 pm

A friend who lives in Newtown, CT brought a grove of tuliptrees in Paugussett State Park to my attention. The area is on the west side of the forest, I only looked at a fraction of the overall forest. The grove has 5 big trees in relatively close proximity and widening out from there I found more big ones. The tallest ones were in the 125-130' range. The tree below was the overall tallest and largest by volume. It has a substantial trunk and a massive crown. Worth doing a spread and volume investigation.

130', CBH 12.3 feet. I spent more than an hour working on the height, very complex/distributed crown with many possible high points

A couple of views up, tough to capture the immensity of the crown

In general the woods are youngish but there is a regular assortment of older sugar maple, black birch, yellow birch, some with good height. Also one big and tall beech that I located. Need to go back and spend some more time getting some measurements. Also, looking at Google satellite view I can see some aother potential tall groves.

Andrew,

Good finds. Tulips in Connecticut hold lots of potential. I expect that we will eventually find a 160. The park that Ryan, Bart, and I investigated had them up to 155 and that was several years ago.

Hey Andrew,

Those are some great trees! If you're heading back to that area anytime soon, let me know. I'd love to tag along.
