While I was in Suffield, Ct today, on the edge of a cemetery I found 3 small tulip trees, the biggest 3'4" cbh and about 25 feet tall. What I found unusual, at least in my limited experience, is they had branches and leaves all the way to ground level. Is there more then one type of tulip tree? I took a few pictures. On the bigger trunk you can see where branches have broken off and are healing. Will these signs disappear as the tree ages? Sam Goodwin

Most species of trees will retain lower branches if left in the open, at least for awhile. I recently trimmed some 15' tall white birches with branches to the ground. Such shade intolerant species, in the forest, quickly lose their branches, which break off and heal over quickly, if still small.
