Ents,
Well done, everyone, and congratulations to Ryan. Here's to the many more tall tulips hopefully to come! Connecticut trees have never really stood out to me before, other than some of the white pines, but it looks like Ryan's found a true gem. Happy hunting!

Congratulations on the tulips. The one day I was committed to driving the senior citizen van you find the big ones. May be the next time? A couple of weeks ago I measured the Pinchot sycamore, I got 27' 11" and averaged 98' tall. Its nice to know I measure close to the correct numbers. Sam

Sam,
It's a close call. I shot repeatedly before I settled on the 99.1 feet. You can vary an inch of circumference depending on where you establish the ground point. I'd say you did very well on your measurements. We'll keep you informed on our next Connecticut excursion.

An enthusiasic congratulations regarding the tulip trees in Trumbull. 150's in New England is certainly BIG news and now the search is on for big and tall tulip trees in Connecticut.

Great eye Ryan and great confirmation of some great trees in CT!
Bob- is it really the tallest in CT? Isn't there a comparable white pine in the Cathedral Pines?

Will,
Once upon a time, the Cathedral Pines would have had many over 155. Now they have none. The July 1989 storm did them in. There is one around 140. Bummer.

Re: Connecticut's tallest tree - the LeClair Tulip Poplar
Ents,
I am excited to announce that the LeClair Tulip tree is approaching 160 feet, and may have actually eclipsed it. While standing 40 feet above the tree's roots, I was able to find a twig that was 120 feet above me. I was not able to replicated that measurement, however. In any case the LeClair tulip tree appears to be growing steadily, and if it is not currently in 160-foot territory, it should be there within a couple of years.

Ryan,
I do want to get down there and measure trees with you. Connecticut is looking better and better.
