Natural areas list for western Connectucut

Post by AndrewJoslin » Sat Feb 04, 2012 3:11 pm

This is an excellent "natural areas" list for public lands of western Connecticut including tree species lists for many of the sites. Quite a bit to filter through but if cross-referenced with map/satellite views might be able to find more favorable forested river/floodplain sites in Connecticut

I really enjoyed reading their description of

"There were not that many plants down by the river. Too shaded perhaps." Haha, too many big tuliptrees!

Here's another interesting property from the botanical web site list: Mianus River State Park

Impressive species diversity and being along a river there's always hope for some decent size trees:

Acer saccharum (sugar maple)
Betula alleghaniensis (yellow birch)
Betula lenta (black birch)
Carpinus caroliniana (musclewood)
Carya ovata (shagbark hickory)
Castanea dentata (American chestnut)
Cornus florida (flowering dogwood) 5/05/02
Fagus grandifolia (American beech)
Fraxinus americana (white ash)
Ilex opaca (American holly)
Juniperus virginiana (red cedar)
Liriodendron tulipifera (tulip tree)
Nyssa sylvatica (tupelo)
Ostrya virginiana (American hop hornbeam)
Pinus strobus (white pine)
Platanus occidentalis (American sycamore)
Prunus serotina (black cherry)
Quercus alba (white oak)
Quercus palustris (pin oak)
Quercus prinus (chestnut oak)
Quercus rubra (red oak)
Quercus velutina (black oak)
Sassafras albidum (sassafras)
Thuja occidentalis (arbor-vitae)
Tilia americana (American basswood)
Tsuga canadensis (eastern hemlock)
Ulmus americana (American elm)
Ulmus rubra (slippery elm)

Hey Andrew, I'd still be interested in checking this site out. Just tell me if you are too!
