Old ? Sassafras

Post by tsharp » Wed May 06, 2020 12:55 pm

NTS: I came across this large Sassafras January 2020 accidently by turning around in a church parking lots. At first glance my species ID through the car window questionable. After getting out of the car and circling the tree and scratching my head a neighbor came over and confirmed it was a Sassafras.
I had never seen on that showed a lot of age as this one does.

Turner,

What a tree (Or “Sass,” as Tom Howard would say)! I’ve never seen anything comparable, either. Great find.

That's a beast! I doubt it has great age, though. We have a planted one in the NC mountains that is huge as well. I never see big sassafras in the forests in NC, but they get big in TN.
