Kouta,

The 326' Smith Place Tree is clearly not laser based and doubtfully a climber deployed tapeline either. The source is 2nd hand as well.

I suspect there was/is a tall tree measured in Smith Place, but the accuracy is suspect in my honest opinion. I am still interested in trying to find this tree however and I hope to visit this area in 2012. The upper Queets Valley a vast basin. To find this specific tree may be impossible. The Smith Place is heavy overgrown and almost has returned to the forest. I recently read almost nothing of the old homestead remains there.

All,

Could the giant spruce be the Quinalt Lake Spruce measured over the basal swell? Of course it would have been badly mismeasured for height (191' to smallish broken top). It COULD be 27' if measured at 4.5 feet. Just a thought.

the spruce i saw, from those i talked with which was many, think it lost 80ish ft. of its top which is why i am not finding a 270ft. tree on the web. One lady thinks it is on the way to the Hoh, just inside park boundary.  been too long for me to remember details.  I know it was somewhere in the area, somewhere between Amanda Park and the Hoh. i spent an hour or so talking with DNR, FS etc.

I will be up in the Redwoods next week, be cool to hang with Michael T. or Steve S. or anyone who appreciates these trees.  Old growth trees are a passion of mine.  Been visiting the Sequoias since '85 and living in Visalia, Ca. since '04, hiking the Giant forest.  Know it quite well!  If interested, let me know. thanks,   Barry  559 283 3797

Don,

That's lichen up there. Very common in the tall redwoods and douglas fir of the pacific NW.
