Valley City oak

Post by Steve Galehouse » Tue Apr 14, 2015 6:51 pm

NTS-

Today I measured an oak in Valley City, Medina County to assist Ohio's big tree coordinator, Alistair Reynolds. The tree was reported to him several years ago to be 80' in height with a CBH of 241'' and a spread of 132'. The dimensions I got were 243'' CBH, 82.1' in height, and an average spread of 116'. The tree has shed some major limbs due to storm damage, so the reduction of spread is understandable. The problem is that it was reported as a swamp white oak, but to me looks like a white oak from the bark and crown characteristics. There was very little leaf litter remaining near the tree, but what was there was white oak.

What do you as a group think the species is, based on the photos?

Looks like straight up white oak to me too.

I'm also kinda impressed the height was so close to whomever measured it last. Usually broad spreading tree heights are inaccurate. Did they use ENTS' methods I wonder?

Steve,

Wow, nice oak. I'm looking forward to verifying some of the champs down here in SW Ohio.

I agree, the shingle-like plates on the upper branches lead me to think white oak. I included some zoomed in images. I would also expect the lower trunk to have deeper furrows for swamp white.

Matt,

Yep, a white oak. About as classic as you can get.
