Here's a more concrete example:

Let's say the little, second growth tree on the left is 100 yrs old. Given even data on a different site's climate, soils, etc. could you reliably say that if you found a different second growth site with identically sized and aged trees, that this new site once supported old growth trees the same size/volume as the tree on the right?

I bet you could. I was hoping that the site index already did this, but I'll take your word for it that it is good enough for little more than vague, commonsense hand-waving.
