A nice sycamore in Elyria

Post by Steve Galehouse » Fri Aug 22, 2014 6:46 pm

NTS-

Today I measured a very handsome single pith sycamore at Elywood Park in Elyria, Ohio. This tree, which is on the floodplane of the Black River, was 19' 1'' cbh by 102'---I'm sure it's taller than that, and I'll return after leaf drop to remeasure. This is by far the most massive single trunked forest grown sycamore I've measured.

Larry-

They grow pretty fast; I would think this tree to be 150, 200 at most.

I got back to this sycamore earlier this winter, and got a height of 105'; a large section of the top has broken off. It's girth is still impressive, especially for a single pith forest grown tree. Near this tree, also on the Black River floodplain, is a tulip at 147', which is the tallest I've seen any tree get on level ground.
