When I was a child there was a rather large (3-6ft CBH, 15-20ft tall?) American Chestnut tree behind my grandparents house. I had no idea how rare a tree of that size was. We used to eat the chestnuts. The tree is now gone and has been for over a decade. I don't know it is succumbed to blight or if it was cut down by my crazy aunt. We even hung a basketball hoop from it and played ball on it. Wish it was still there.
