Beginning April 1, 2017, the George Landis Arboretum will be welcoming hundreds of participants to our Great Oak Hunt. The Arboretum’s mission has always been to bring the community closer to nature — and nature closer to the community. To this end, we have a long history of hosting horticultural workshops, nature education programs, and classes for families and children. This year, one of the highlights on our calendar is the Great Oak Hunt.

The challenge: to find the three largest white and red oak trees in our surrounding counties, which include Schoharie, Montgomery, Saratoga, Fulton, Otsego, Herkimer, Delaware, Greene, Albany, and Schenectady. If you are not located in the counties mentioned, we will also be awarding prizes for new State and National Champions - so all entries outside the listed counties are welcome.

The hunt starts on April 1 and finishes on October 1, 2017. Nomination forms and instructions for obtaining measurements will be posted here on our website, at the start of the contest. Prizes will be awarded for those who find the top three white and red oaks found in the contest area. Nomination forms WILL NOT be available until the beginning of the contest, and ALL entries must be on the official nomination form to be considered.
