Erik,

You're seeing what I'm seeing. From the Northway (87), I've been looking at a handful of trees that ought to top 140', but the only real access is on foot, and a pretty good walk. But that's fine. Fall would be fine; I'll likely be up there to hunt in October, but I can make multiple trips, as well.

NTS,

Following this weekend's return visit to the Pine Orchard, I have an updated list of measurements of the magnificent White Pines:

155.3' x 13.28' (previous tallest)
153.2' x 13.21'
151.3' x 12.12' (new tree)
150.3' x 12.72' (new tree)
145.8' x 12.44' (new tree)
139.3' x 14.98'
127.5' x 14.75'

A couple of other interesting observations from the outing:

-I counted ~145 growth rings at ~20' from the base of a fallen and cut Red Spruce. Given the slow initial growth rate of the species, it may have germinated around the same time as the nearby White Pine grove (c. 1815).

-Amidst the old White Pines I came upon several Painted Trilliums (Trillium undulatum). In my opinion, they're the most beautiful of the Trilliums, and the one I see the least. At the trailhead were several Purple Trilliums (Trillium erectum) in bloom, as well.
