Wizard of Oz Oak Grove Jan. 2015

On Jan. 4, 2015, after leaving the Liverpool School Maple Grove, Elijah Whitcomb and I measured trees in the Wizard of Oz Memorial Oak Grove at North Syracuse Junior High School:

Red Oak: Baum Tree (49"+ dbh) in the grove's northwest corner is the largest tree in the grove, and until this date was the tallest tree in North Syracuse. In Nov. 2014 I measured this tree to a height of 114.9 ft. On Jan. 4 Elijah got 114.2 ft.

White Oak: 110.4 ft. (30.3" dbh - this seems to be a maximum height for White Oak in this grove), John Lennon White Oak 108.9 ft., Einstein White Oak 110 ft.

Red Maple: Mother Teresa Red Maple 111.7 ft., Red Maple in southeast part of Forest Cathedral ("Magic Maple') 115.1 ft., measured by Elijah, tallest tree in grove and in North Syracuse, Red Maple in eastern part of Forest Cathedral (about 18" dbh) 111.5 ft.

Black Gum: we made several attempts to get the height of the Anne Frank Black Gum, an old tree with a wide extremely complex crown. The best we could do was 93.1 ft. This is still the tallest Black Gum I know of in NY, and it is almost certainly taller than 93 ft. In 2009, Robert Henry measured a height of 94.5 ft. for this tree.

Tom- Awesome! If I ever get up to New England for trees the Wizard of Oz Oak Grove is a must visit site. I remember the postings you have done in the past on this special place. Larr
