North Syracuse Cemetery Oak Grove 12/27/2014

NTS,

On Dec. 27, 2014 (mild, cloudy, 54 degrees f., no snow on the ground) I visited my favorite sight, the old growth North Syracuse Cemetery Oak Grove. The crooked old Oaks towering into the gray sky were an awesome sight, especially in the densest area southeast of the dry vernal pool in the center of the grove. On this day (and on earlier days in 2014) I updated the heights of some of these Oaks (numbers of the trees correspond to numbers in the brochure Robert Henry and developed about this site in 1999):

White Oak #19 33.7" dbh 104 ft. (straight up shot) up from 98.8 ft. in 2012
White Oak #21 34.4" dbh 101 ft. (straight up shot) up from 95 ft. in 2012
White Oak #22 21" dbh 111.8 ft. up from 105.6 ft. in 2012
White Oak #23 32.1" dbh 109.72 ft. up from 108.94 ft in 2012 - one of the largest forest-grown White Oaks in central NY
White Oak #24 25.2" dbh 111.81 ft. up from 109.45 ft. in 2012 - tallest White Oak in central NY
White Oak #25 23.6" dbh 110.61 ft. up from 109.34 ft. in 2012
White Oak #33 39.1" dbh 99 ft. up from 98 ft. in 2012
Black Oak #27 46.2" dbh 105.2 ft. up from 104.9 ft. in 2012 - tallest Black Oak in central NY
Red Oak north of Red Oak #13 20.6" dbh 104.7 ft. up from 104.1 ft. in 2012
Red Oak east of Black Gum #34 24.4" dbh 106.7 ft. up from 105 ft. in 2012

This dense old growth grove has at least 37 trees 100 or more ft. tall in 1 acre.
