unknown variety of oak in New York City

Post by tclikesbigtrees » Mon Nov 03, 2014 5:10 pm

Yesterday my dad and I went to New York City for a dinner. Since we got there early, we decided to walk around the area. We came upon this Oak tree that I don't know what variety it is. It isn't like anything that I have seen before. Please help identify.

Looks like a post oak leaf on Jenny Craig.

Tom,

The leaves look like classic bur oak, a species that I absolutely love. I'm lucky to have some big bur oaks nearby.

Here's a leaf from a tree near me:

The leaves on the Bur Oak that I photographed in Lancaster, Pa about 1 month ago don't look anything like that.

Tom,

I agree, there seems to be a lot of variation in bur oak leaves. The ones with the skinny middles are the ones that I most strongly associate with bur oak.

Here's another leaf from a different local bur oak that isn't quite as skinny in the middle.

Things like that can be confusing.

Tom, I've seen a handful of Bur Oak in PA, none around here, and the ones I've seen also are not anywhere near that thin. It makes sense though. This is probably more like the appearance of the ones you saw...

Tom,

Those are definitely bur oak leaves. Like black oak and some others in the genus, the leaves vary dramatically in how deeply lobed they are. Bur oak is unusual in that the the lobes on the basal half are often much deeper than those on the outer end, which you can see on your tree.

Here are a couple more bur oak leaves. I've been experimenting with some different photoshop effects, such as removing the background.
