Wow I am so bummed out that never got to see that tree. The last few months have been tough on some of our heritage trees. Bob, there are a few at nearby UMASS campus too. The best specimens I have seen are at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain. I have 3 nice plants around 30 years old here at my shop too.

I personally am not against hunting. In the absence of wolves and mountain lions here in Massachusetts the deer have really had the run of the place.
