Re: Rooms Beyond the Walls

Bob, Thank you so much. After seeing your fine writing, not to mention your ability to have such good relationships, I felt very pleased to hear what you had to say. I wrote this and "The Road To Pilot Mountain" more than 10 years ago, probably closer to 20 years, in a beginning creative writing cla...

Re: Murmurations

Chimney swifts stop in Asheville N.C. chimneys while migrating (to Peru?) in autumn. YouTube has video. Search Asheville chimney swifts. And then there are the famous birds of my home state: buzzards. The swallows return to Capistrano, the buzzards return to Hinckley, Ohio.

Re: Murmurations

Steve,

I saw "Canadian soldiers" on the deck of an iron ore carrying steamship in the 1950s when I was a little girl. I still remember the awful crunch whenever I took a step. Couldn't lean against the walls either. They were everywhere.

Re: "Among the Ancients"

I haven't read Among the Ancients yet, but I loved Teaching the Trees. I often tell people about the chapter called Tree Hugger (among others) that describes the importance of students finding their passion and helping them by not being afraid to show your own passion.

Re: Ireland Trees and Forests Links

Thank you for the link to the Tree Council. The video was very informative and gave me hope for the oaks of Ireland. My light research on Irish tree planting had given me the impression that mainly pines were being planted. I had never heard clootie trees called rag trees before. I liked the close u...

The Road to Pilot Mountain

The Road to Pilot Mountain After the rush of the interstate Thirty miles per hour On the country road Seems so sensuously Slow. Noon’s bounty of sun-fall, Wind with winter’s hint, Love me all along my out-resting arm. Path of a butterfly ahead Bouncing on air Being of brilliance in orange Drops onto...

Rooms Beyond the Walls

This story began as a timed writing exercise. "Write about a room in the house you lived in when you were five years old," the teacher said. I was soon out of the house and into a tree. Rooms Beyond the Walls There were rooms beyond the outside walls of the house; places that were sanctuaries for us...
