Re: Middleton and Angel Oaks

Thanks really amazing Larry- I had no idea! Next time I'm down I'll be sure to get a 2nd spread measurement and take extra care to make sure it's accurate to the nearest foot. I was just using my laser this time. Fascinating!

Re: Middleton and Angel Oaks

You're right James- it really is a beautiful tree. Development is fast encroaching and there's only a 150' buffer that has been designated to protect the tree. It's pretty scary. I'm sure the forest around it plays a major role in keeping that tree alive and protecting those extremely gorgeous long ...

Re: Updating the MAX list

I'm aiming to do some final "cleaning up" of the GA list ASAP. Zachary- I'd love to have a copy of your updated list for AL if possible. Email me when you get a chance: eli_dickerson@yahoo.com I can also cater my list to fit ENTS formatting as well. ONce again, if anyone knows of some hidden away ca...

Re: Could we have a lower south meet and greet weekend?

I'm in for Congaree! Love that park, though i've only been twice so far. I'm interested in doing more research on maximum CBH and height for native vine species in the park. Also max heights for cypress knees, which a fellow ENTS mentioned in a previous post.

Re: Beecher Hills, Atlanta, GA

Bob- I've gotten to do some fairly thorough searching in about a dozen sites around Atlanta including (but not limited to): Fernbank Forest Frazer Forest Emory Forest Storza Woods (Piedmont Park) Beecher Hampton Park Cascade Springs East Palisades (Chatt. River NRA) Lullwater Park Woodlands Garden (...

Re: Beecher Hills, Atlanta, GA

Fernbank Forest is still in existence (thank God!) behind the Fernbank Science Center and planetarium. Many huge trees still exist. Numerous Tulip's over 150', the nicest sourwoods, ironwoods, hickories, and white oaks in the city. Lots of animal diversity as well. Oh and Jess Riddle and I found 2 w...

Middleton and Angel Oaks

Hello all, I had a fantastic trip to Charleston this weekend and got updated measurements on both the Angel Oak and Middleton Oak (and I found another biggie). Sidney Frazier (head horticulturalist) was kind enough to show me the Middleton Oak and share some if it's history (he's worked there since ...

Re: Atlanta city Rucker 10 index

Atlanta's RI is now easily over 137'. I imagine with some more thorough searching for Carya and Quercus species in particular this number will increase. Heck, there may even be taller Tulips! Can't wait for leaf drop!

Re: Atlanta city Rucker 10 index

Part of the reason I got started hunting for big trees in Atlanta was b/c I realized that our "City Champion" tree list needed some major work. It is maintained by Trees Atlanta, a local nonprofit. Atlanta (like many major cities) has a closed loop of interstate around it, I-285, and that has been u...
