Re: Fernbank Forest, GA - Rucker 10 Index reaches 136'

Bob- the ceiling for tulips in Fernbank Forest seems to be in the 150-155' range. Many are high 140's. The oldest ones have had their tops blown out, leaving them a good bit shorter than some of the younger tulips.

Re: Quercus falcata breaks 130' in Fernbank Forest!

I like a little healthy competition! It seems there's very little data on this species too. Unless Jess is holding out on some data we don't know about.

Quercus falcata breaks 130' in Fernbank Forest!

I just located and measured a superlative Southern red oak ( Quercus falcata ) in Fernbank Forest that I believe may be a new maximum for the species in the state or beyond. It's got a complex, twisty crown and is competing with surrounding tuliptrees in the upper (drier) portions of the Forest. As ...

Re: Spooner Live Oak- Iron City, GA

Larry- both Mark and I were commenting how we were bummed you couldn't make it. We can make a Cadre trip whenever Will does the volume mapping! You gotta see this beast in person.... it's quite a sight.

Re: Spooner Live Oak- Iron City, GA

Will- if you could climb this tree it would be fantastic. The locals came out in full force just for our tree measuring- lots of support- and would surely support a climb! A few folks mentioned the enormous volume and questions about what a "champion tree" is or isn't came up. I was quick to point o...

Spooner Live Oak- Iron City, GA

I just got back from a quick trip to South Georgia where I visited the giant "Spooner Oak" in Iron City, GA. Mark McClellan, the Georgia Forestry Commission state big tree coordinator invited me to help take careful measurements. My being on the American Forests cadre was hugely important for this v...
