Re: 'Leverett Dashboard' for Michigan

Erik, I tried to catch this but I was too late. Bob told me that he thinks the 209" x 154' tree was measured by someone not associated with NTS and is therefore likely unreliable. He also felt that his 16.9' (202.8") x 146' tree from the Porcupine Mountains was probably the same tree. This tree is n...

Re: 'Leverett Dashboard' for Michigan

NTS, I caught a mistake for the girths. I forgot to drop the white pine girth from 17.42' to 16.9'. Bob told me that he did not measure any white pine in the Porkies to 17.42' and that that measurement was made by someone who is not an NTS member. He did, however, measure one to 16.9' in girth in th...

Re: 'Leverett Dashboard' for Michigan

NTS, I forgot to mention that a few of the trees for Michigan appear to be the tallest or largest in girth that we have yet measured. I put these species in bold. As always, if I made any mistakes please bring it to my attention and I'll correct them. I also made an attempt to put a name to the pers...

'Leverett Dashboard' for Michigan

NTS, several years ago Bob Leverett had the idea of a dashboard so that anyone could easily see the tallest trees and perhaps also the largest trees in girth and other dimensions for each state. I thought it was a great idea but nothing ever came of it. I'm hoping the time has now come to push this ...

Michigan List

NTS, here is a list of the tall and large trees of Michigan that I've compiled from measurements made by NTS. Michigan Trees Post.xlsx A few notes are in order. The list is arranged alphabetically by scientific name. Numbers in red refer to the largest measurement of height, girth, etc. for each spe...

Re: Kentucky Coffeetrees in Michigan

Erik, it really was unbelievable luck on my part, especially since this is one of my favorite species. I never would have thought that the species would reach 111' in Michigan because although it has a fairly wide distribution in the state all of the populations appear to be quite small and, as you ...

Horner-McLaughlin Woods, Michigan

NTS, I visited this 90 acre forest that is owned by the University of Michigan in November of 2018. The forest is close to Ann Arbor in Washtenaw county and I had visited the site once in May, 2009 without making any measurements but I knew I just had to go back to make a few measurements. I was mos...

Henry Ford Fair Lane, Michigan

NTS, Henry Ford and his wife Clara built a house at this site from 1913 to 1915. It was built on 1,300 acres of farmland along the Rouge River in Dearborn which is located in Wayne county. The site is now a National Historic Landmark and some of the land is now owned by the University of Michigan-De...

Brighton State Recreation Area, Michigan

NTS, back in November of 2016 I measured a couple of trees at this state park in Livingston county. A father and son that my mom knew wanted me to measure a big tree that they found in the park. Unfortunately I don't recall their names but I'm hoping I wrote it down somewhere. In any case the tree t...

Kentucky Coffeetrees in Michigan

NTS, back in 2014 I was planning on planting some Kentucky coffeetrees but I wanted to grow them from seeds of trees growing within Michigan. Mark Rouw, the Iowa Big Tree Guy, told me that I should contact Andy Schmitz because he knows coffeetrees particularly well. Andy Schmitz is the director of h...
