Bird Injuries/Illnesses

If in Maine or Southern New Hampshire: In the spirit of the Martin Luther King quote about helping people and animals in need, I'm a bird rehabber! If you ever see an injured gull, pigeon, starling, sparrow, hawk,....any bird - even a baby who has fallen out of a nest and can't be replaced. Get in t...

Re: Pileated Woodpecker

Ed,

This was taken in Maine (Cape Elizabeth) in a nice 80 acre mostly coniferous forest. I heard chickadees, tufted titmice, and white breasted nuthatches around too.

Pileated Woodpecker

Was thrilled to see this awesome Pileated Woodpecker drilling for insects in a clearing with primarily dead birches in an otherwise coniferous/oak/maple/ash forest. I attracted it close enough to get a picture by using my Audubon Bird phone app which has call sounds loud enough for birds to react! I...

Re: Archaeology of Autumn

Here's an attempt:

Autumn's Last Days

The oak and maple branches sweep the sky
While towering White Pines stretch out their green needles boldly,
Careless of the season, watching the prancing chickadees.
They eye the low hemlocks, balsams, and even the spruces - bemused.

Re: Archaeology of Autumn

Nice Ed! Thanks for posting. Sets up a challenge for me to do the same writing in the November landscape bleakness.

Hurricane Sandy Damage to Trees, Central Park, NYC

20121107Oaks2-blog480.jpg Finally getting around to posting about the damage to trees in my beloved Central Park. Each article is accompanied by photos, like the one above. I have visited since, and the park reopened quickly and the clean-up has been swift - although the North Woods (area between 1...

birds and leaves

HI!!!! Put together another Central Park video. Mostly birds, but some nice photos of sweet gum leaves and a beautiful gingko leave (w/oak leave). Vimeo blurs images, but it's still worth checking out the variety of birds. You may have to copy and paste just the link. (ED! Help! Can't remember how t...

Re: Anyone in Maine, NH, or eastern Mass for hiking?

Andrew,

I would love that! Let me know when you can go. My last baby sparrow is just starting to eat seeds on her own, so I'll be able to leave her for a day.

Thanks! And we'll talk about your day with Lulu....

Anyone in Maine, NH, or eastern Mass for hiking?

HI, I'm in Maine for the foreseeable future and would love to finally get out into the woods for some hiking. I'm living in Cape Elizabeth, Maine (just south of Portland). If anyone is going out hiking (or birding) somewhere within a few hours of me, I'd love to join you! And I won't bring my bird L...
