Re: Live Oak Tree in my yard

Steve, Possibly, I'm not really sure. 10 degrees is the minimum for those Oaks. I've dug up trees from the north and planted them here. After a few years the heat and humidity takes its toll on them. I once brought a Blue Spruce from Colorado and kept it for 3 years. I also had some Balsom Fir and S...

Re: Barred owl sighting

Steve, Very good photo. Owls are just to cool, such a silent flier. I've had them fly right next to me and I barely heard a wisp. Larry

Re: very nice cedar tree in downtown Winchester, VA

That's a Deodar, maybe my favorite conifer. We have one in Columbus, Ms., at MSMS University for Women. I saw it about 10 years ago when a cousin was at class there, its huge! I need to go back up there and measure it, the MSMS tree is over 100 years old. Thanks for posting that photo-beautiful! Larry

Live Oak Tree in my yard, MS

ENTS, I climbed a young Live Oak in my yard (45-50 Years) yesterday to get the the perspective of my backyard from the trees view. The first photo shows the crown split typical with Live Oak at 12'. The second photo is my backyard from 24' up the tree. The tree in the left is a Darlington Oak 63' Hi...

Re: Confirming the remaining 150s

Bob, The amount of 150's you are documenting truly shows what a special site the Algonquin Area really is. I like the map you did it really is detailed. Perhaps the Forest Service could use your ideas to map Old Growth in the Eastern US. I'd like to do something like that with all of the Live Oaks I...

Re: Flowering Trees and Plants

Steve, Down here the Loropetalum get 10' tall they are awesome! The Bigleaf Magnolia is one of our most spectacular flowering trees. 10-12 Dia., Flowers, a understory species. I'll make a trip up from the coast 50 miles to get some photos. They bloom in May the leaves are cool to, 20-30" in length. ...
