Re: Initial forays on Staten Island

Erik,

Those trees are awesome, especially that giant Tuliptree - you're right - I think it should be the NYS champion.

The Sweetgum, I think, is the tallest in NY.

Cayuga Lake State Park

On this sunny, rather cool (about 69 F), sometimes breezy day, Elijah Whitcomb and I explored Cayuga Lake State Park. This site consists of lawns with big trees (mainly White Oak, Red Oak, Pignut Hickory), and forested ravines leading back from Cayuga Lake. The forest in the ravines is mostly old gr...

Holland Patent Cemetery

NTS, On our way to Pack Forest, Elijah Whitcomb and I stopped at Holland Patent Cemetery, the site of central NY’s largest White Pine. Elijah had been there recently, and he measured a 124 ft. tall White Pine in the old 2nd growth forest on the steep hill at the back of the cemetery. This is the tal...

Re: New York State Thruway Parking Area - west of exit 33

NTS, On our way back from Pack Forest, Elijah Whitcomb and I made a brief survey of this site, which I reported on in 2010. Most of the large trees of this wetland site are Freeman Maples (hybrid of Red Maple with Silver Maple), rather than the Silver Maples, which I thought they were in 2010. They ...

Re: Stewart Park, ithaca, NY

I'd like to thank Bob Leverett, Erik Danielsen, Elijah Whitcomb for the fantastic outing to Stewart Park, Ithaca Sat. Aug. 8. We had a great time among those awesome Cottonwoods. The Cottonwoods and other trees in Fuertes Bird Sanctuary are among the most magnificent trees I've ever seen in eastern ...

Re: Cornell Plantations June 7, 2015

I am free, but there is no way I can get to Ithaca today, as I have no vehicle.

As far as I know, Elijah and I are going to Ithaca late tomorrow morning.
