NY State DEC's Big Tree Program non-existant

The list of NY champions is completely bogus: http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/lands_forests_pdf/treechampcom061413.pdf Almost all the trees were measured in 2010 and almost all of them list a Douglas Bassett as the nominator or R. Cook. Basically it looks like one or two guys in 2010 went around measurin...

Re: Largest elm in NY

Yes tsharp the top was closer to me with a laser than the base no matter where I stood. Elms have extremely umbrella-shaped crowns. I think this problem is unique to elms. Maybe not unique but definitely the worst with them. Elms often have, and the Johnstown elm especially has, a crown that is much...

Re: Arborvitea

The arrow points to the top of the stem which is 47 inches in girth. The two trees are both multi-stem, and the largest single stems are 47, 38, 36, and 32. They are all about the same height but the 47 inch stem is the biggest one. The multi-stem situation is near the ground. Basically, there are m...

Arborvitea

Just found an arborvitea which is larger than the current NY champion

It's 47 inches around and 54 feet tall. Current champion is 44 and 44.

Didn't catch the crown spread. It's over a barn on the corner of Route 147 and Barkersville Rd in Galway, NY. Saratoga County.

Re: Ancient prehistoric trees discovered in Alaska

Climate change is serious business. I read heavily about the Scandinavian colonies in Greenland between 986 AD and 1400 AD. There were about 4000 Norwegian/Danish settlers there raising cattle and sheep, growing wheat and barley, there were dozens of bustling villages with churches and a brewery. Th...

Ancient prehistoric trees discovered in Alaska

The melting of the glaciers in Alaska has uncovered a forest of trees that grew during the Medieval Warming period 1100 years ago and were buried under glaciers during the Little Ice Age. http://www.livescience.com/39819-ancient-forest-thaws.html The are finding hemlock and spruce in such good condi...

Re: Largest elm in NY

You got that right. Every time I tried to shoot the top with the Nikon, with the sine method or the cosine method, the top was closer than the base!!!!!!

Shooting straight up was the only way.

Re: Largest elm in NY

As for the pic I posted on Oct 7, that is not going to work. When I got a better look, that top is not really higher it's just closer. The highest point on the tree is not visible from anywhere on the ground, because of the umbrella shape to the crown. I eventually gave up looking for the top and ju...

Re: Largest elm in NY

I was the same distance from the base as I was from the point on the ground directly under the top.
