Re: castle sequoia fire
Hopefully that one made it thru the fire, at least if it did it wont have all the thorny bushes around its base. The one i am really worried about is the summit road tree, remember it had that big sequoia bole laying upon its base? I am really hoping that debris's fire didn't light up and eat thru t...

Re: castle sequoia fire
I actually managed to get to talk to the forestry management up in mountain home. I was trying to see if i could get up there before winter set in and could not. However i did talk to them about the damage. They did not have much in the way of specifics for me, but they estimated a very sad approx 6...

For those of us out there that are sequoia fans, the fires in california this season have been unprecedented also. The castle fire which started aug 19th specifically has hit about a dozen grove's in the southern range of their limited native habitat, and the damage looks unparalleled. The loss of i...

Re: limb and tree measurement
hey, in the case of a circular/non elliptical tree your above formula is exactly the same as the one on my sheet isn't it? After replacing the radii with diameters that is. the above formula is for a simple conical frustum yes? i was thinking that if i took frequent data points on the trunk and did ...

Re: limb and tree measurement
what i have been trying to do is take measurements at points where there is a slope break in the silhouette of the tree rather than at the traditional 60, 120, 180 feet heights. it seems like it would provide a truer estimate. and i usually wrap a tape measure around the tree 3 times, one level at c...

limb and tree measurement
Hi there. my name is rick and i am wondering if there is an expert in measuring out there using a rangefinder and solo monocular that i could run a couple thoughts by. my easy question would be about measuring a large limb. it seems to me when measuring the size on a limb you would take the dimensio...
