Re: Warming climate and forest change

Larry, Yes there is some boreal forest in Douglas County in northwestern WI. The ecotone between temperate and boreal forests is a few hundred miles wide from northern Minnesota to northern New England, and there are patches of the two biomes that respond to local temperature variation, as well as s...

Warming climate and forest change

ENTS: Several studies from the University of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology have shown that temperate hardwood species like sugar maple, red maple, and northern red oak, are invading boreal forests throughout the Great Lakes Region. Re: Routledge Handbook of Forest Ecology

Joe, I think the managed forest chapter is middle of the road, as is the chapter on ecological impacts of logging. Advantages and disadvantages of various practices are pointed out. Bob, the more I sleep, the more efficiently I get things done during the day. Getting a lot done is more about how eff...

Re: Saskatchewan forest fires July 2015

Kouta, I will have a couple extra days in Estonia beyond the Iufro conference in Tartu, which is close to Järvselja, so I might be able to measure those trees. Regarding the statement about 'jack pine and black spruce after fir', its just missing one letter, it should be 'jack pine and black spruce ...

Re: Saskatchewan forest fires July 2015

Bob, I should have said Saskatchewan and Alberta forest fires, and a few have started in Manitoba as well. It seems there are hundreds of fires in northwestern Canada and Alaska. See the satellite image below of the incredibly large smoke plume that is consolidated from many fires. Picture1.jpg Rega...
