It is a pity that the expedition didn't apparently have a laser rangefinder.
Fitzroya's stature resembles giant sequoia, but the latter grows in summer-dry environment subjected to frequent fires (at least in the past). I haven't been to Chile, but I think Fitzroya grows in a wet climate, and also at poorly drained sites. Perhaps western red-cedar (Thuja plicata) would be a better North American equivalent.
