Ernest Hemingway wrote about the virgin hemlock forests at his family's vacation home in Michigan. He described how enormous trees were felled just for the bark, which was stripped off. I also recall how he spoke of having to climb over the felled trunks which were as thick as he was tall. Entire groves knocked over just so that the bark could be peeled off.
