Joe, Newbie,
Despite what one might imagine because of the prevailing desert climate, Arizona has some great trees. Will and I had a friend who documented the big trees of Arizona, the late Dr. Robert Zahner. Bob did a lot to call attention to Arizona's champions. More recently Don Bertolette did his share while a research forester at the Grand Canyon NP.
Newbie,
Are you aware that we have a western arm of ENTS, called WNTS, the Western Native Tree Society. We've made Durango, CO our honorary headquarters, mainly because the San Juans are an endless treasure of big and surprisingly tall trees, and we haven't scratched the surface. Monica and I plan to be in Durango continuing the mission in late June. Maybe you can join us for a big tree search mission.
Bob
